From the Desk of the Director

happy new year 2018

Dear Friends

With every New Year, there is the potential to begin life with a new direction and new goals. Each year we make promises that this will be the year that we accomplish our goals, and sometimes we are successful, sometimes we are not. It would be nice, just for once, if we could let ourselves off the hook and make our goals positive rather than negative, progressive rather than punitive, and enjoy life as it is. The choice to change is always with us daily, not annually. If we could say each day, “Today I will enjoy the day fully and be happier than I was the day before,” and we do, our goal is reached. Change is constant, and not just once a year. It allows us to gradually adapt to the world around us. It also allows us to feel that we are in control of our future.

It is well documented in scientific studies that the aging process is easier from a mental health perspective when those who are older adults and are retired are engaged in an active lifestyle. Having somewhere to go with something to do—a purpose--makes a positive impact on the daily wellbeing of aging adults. The Council on Aging offers programming to meet a range of abilities and interests. Lasting friendships are possible through meeting people in activities at the COA. Many have said that having the programs and activities at the Council on Aging has made a positive impact on their happiness and wellbeing.

It is never too late to make a positive change in your life—and to enjoy the company of others who are retired. Make your goal one that is positive, and enjoy!

Happy New Year (and beyond!)
