THE TRUTH ABOUT SODIUM
Sodium is a mineral essential to the proper functioning of body chemistry, and is one of several minerals which comprise electrolytes. Electrolytes work most efficiently when the proper balance of minerals in combination is maintained. A diet high in sodium unbalances electrolytes and inhibits the body’s ability to function properly. High sodium levels may lead to high blood pressure, kidney and cardiovascular disease and stroke. Sodium occurs naturally in foods, but is found in high concentrations in processed foods. The typical American adult daily consumes over 3,300 milligrams of sodium, but the recommended daily maximum is 2,300 milligrams. Easy ways to reduce your daily consumption of sodium includes eating fresh foods which are home prepared (not processed), eating fresh fruits and vegetables, choosing lower sodium alternatives when eating dairy and protein, not adding salt to foods that you are cooking or eating, reading the labels on all condiments and pre-prepared foods and boosting your potassium intake.
